Helcom News - The newsletter of the Helsinki Commission - 1/2008
The release 1/2008 of Helcom News focuses on the recent activity of the Commission and the important goals reached through international cooperation for the safeguard of the Baltic sea.
The Executive Secretary, Mrs. Anne Christine Brusendorff, in the Introduction to this issue, says: "We are proud to have recently passed a historic milestone in marine environmental protection: the creation of a major strategic action plan to cease excessive inputs of pollution and restore the health of the Baltic Sea by 2021. This programme, drawn up through intensive co-ordination and consultations by the nine countries bordering on the Baltic Sea and the European Community - all members of HELCOM - heralds a new era in environmental protection.
The comprehensive, ambitious and at the same time realistic and specific HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan provides a practical example of the implementation of the innovative ecosystem approach, including a programme of measures derived from a common vision of the desired status of the Baltic. The plan quantifies the characteristics of a healthy Baltic Sea, and sets out the measures needed to realise this vision". (font: Helcom News 1/2008)
