Protection plan for Baltic Sea
The Ministers for the Environment in the Baltic Sea Region have approved an action plan to protect the Baltic Sea. The plan to improve the state of the Baltic Sea will include reducing eutrophication and the risks associated with hazardous substances and shipping. It has been prepared within the framework of HELCOM, Helsinki Commission for Baltic Marine Environment Protection.
The action plan sets up clear goals and methods and includes, for example, ceilings on the amount of phosphorus and nitrogen discharged by the countries around the Baltic Sea.
"The ministers for the environment and the Nordic Ministers for Co-operation have given their full support to the HELCOM work during the whole process and stressed the importance of having an ambitious plan. We now have a tool with concrete measures and goals for protecting our common sea. It is time to act", stated the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Halldór Ásgrímsson. MPs around the Baltic Sea have also been very active, in particular in the question of eutrophication. (...)
