Ecosystem Health of the baltic Sea - Helcom

The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission, also known as Helsinki Commission, has released the Baltic Sea Environment Proceedings No. 122, a beautiful publication that makes the point about situation of the Baltic sea in any of its environmental aspects.
This report is an essential document for the environmental managers and decisionmakers in the Baltic region and it is novel in several respects. For the first time an attempt has been made to assess the ecosystem health of an entire regional sea, including the associated costs and benefits to society.
The book introduces a new holistic approach to the research, as better explained by Helcom: "The HELCOM Initial Holistic Assessment is a new and innovative approach, using existing and new tools of HELCOM. This Initial Holistic Assessment of the ecosystem health of the Baltic applies existing and newly developed assessment tools and an economic cost-benefit overview and yields important conclusions: getting started and solving the environmental problems of the Baltic will also safeguard great economic, cultural and social values of the societies in the countries around the Baltic Sea. Postponing urgently needed investments, however, would put these values at stake."
We leave you the pleasure to go through this interesting publication, finding maybe that the conclusions and perspectives about our Sea that Helcom synthesizes are not so far from the impressions you already had in your daily approach to this magical environment. Good reading! :)
Here you can download the publication. Or visit Helcom's website for deepening.

2010 regattas and sailing activities around the High Coast

MOVEuptorace.jpg

Sweden is pure fun for sailors and Höga Kusten is no exception: despite here the season to go playing on the water is quite short - due to the latitude it is "concentrate" from end of May to beginning of September - a very rich racing activity is present.

All the local sailing Clubs have a really intense racing activity on the water and a lot of events are planned for the summer, so the suggestion is to get in touch and to refer to them to get the best.
If you're cruising with your boat the High Coast in that period, you can join several regattas. Lot of them are thought to allow cruising sailors to approach the world of the competition: you can find a lot of club races, where a simple system of compensation (LYS, or similar formulas) allow to race with every kind of boat having fun together. Getting in touch with the race organizers, you can find easily an help to get introduced and all the infos you need to plan your race.

Lot of the regattas are cruising races, probably the best way to conciliate your holidays with family and your "athletic spirit": most important is the Ulvöregattan, organized in July by ÖSS between Örnsköldsvik and the Isle of Ulvön. More info at Örnsköldsviks segelsällskap website.
