The High Coast heritage!

The High Coast - Höga Kusten, included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List, collects some of the most spectacular shorelines in Sweden. However, a large amount of its best stuff is rarely seen, because it is simply too remote to access by land. Most of the coastline remains wild and undeveloped.

First step to appreciate what we see and explore is to understand what are we standing by. We decided to arrange a web tour in the High Coast World Heritage that starts by driving you step-by-step through its foundations.

  • Make time to explore

Nordic nature is probably the greatest attraction for people who visit the region Västernorrland and the environment in the High Coast is very special. >>
  • Protected natural areas

The High Coast is a protected area worldwide and a World Heritage. The site includes one National Park, 18 Nature Reserves, one Nature Conservation Area, 11 Landscape Protection Areas and eight Bird Sanctuaries. >>
  • World Heritage

The High Coast was inscribed on the UNESCO's World Heritage list in the year 2000. What is "World Heritage"? >>

  • High Coast / Kvarken Archipelago

Together, these two areas form a complementary geological complex featuring land uplift unlike anything found elsewhere in the world. >>
  • Natural pearls of the High Coast

"Area of land, with coast and sea as appropriate, where the interaction of people and nature over time has produced an area of distinct character with significant aesthetic, ecological and/or cultural value, and often with high biological diversity." >>
  • The world's highest uplift of land

Sweden was entirely covered by inland ice around 20,000 years ago. The High Coast was the area where the land surface was pressed down the most by the vast, three-kilometre wide glaciers. >>
  • The Marine Realm

The special feature of the marine realm, imparting the greatest scientific significance, is that it represents the submarine extension of the topographical continuum of landscapes undergoing isostatic uplift. >>
  • The Terrestrial Biota

The vegetation displays marked altitudinal zonation and great spatial variability. The High Coast contains large mammal species, such as bear, lynx and moose, which are widespread in Scandinavia. >>
  • The best places by the seaside

Discover the coast from a different perspective: take inspiration from our selection of unusual "blue places" to stay! >>
  • The High Coast on Google Earth

  • Swedish Right of Public Access

In Sweden, anyone can enjoy the pleasures of the countryside. >>
